There is also matching bedding in the Dorma 400 Thread Count range.

Although a lower thread count than the previous product, these sheets are still deep sheets that feel incredible to sleep on.

What does thread count mean?

The thread count of your bed linen is simply the number of vertical and horizontal threads per square inch. Essentially, it measures how tightly woven a piece of fabric is. Generally, the higher the thread count, the more threads within the fabric.

The number of lengthwise (warp) and widthwise (weft) threads within a certain area are added up. For example, a cotton sheet with 100 warp threads and 100 weft threads would have a thread count of 200.

The thread count can be used as a rough indicator of the softness and feel of a fabric. A specific product is also used heavily in marketing to imply higher quality than competing sheets. All of this is true to a degree, but thread count is by no means the only determinant of sheet quality. Learn more about thread count.

The best thread count for sheets

When it comes to bedding, choosing the thread count is a matter of personal preference. Bed sheets with a high thread count, such as 800 thread count sheets, tend to feel denser, giving an impression of a five-star hotel.

Although sheets with 200 thread counts can be incredibly soft, they are still of excellent quality. It may feel lighter and airier to the touch with a lower thread count.

Whichever thread count you choose, the most critical indicator of quality is the fabric. Look for bed linen that’s rich in cotton. In sateen vs Egyptian cotton, we cover the long fibres for supreme softness and other comparisons.

How to make your bed sheets last longer

You can make your bed sheets last longer by buying the best quality you can afford, washing them gently, taking precautions to prevent excessive wear, and mending where you can.

How do you determine good quality sheets?

Four quality indicators should be considered:

  • Fiber type
  • thread count
  • Cotton’s quality
  • Weave type

The best fabric for bedsheets

Cotton, polyester-cotton blends, bamboo, linen, Tencel, flannel, silk and blends of these fibres are all options for bedsheets.

100% cotton sheets are the best option since they offer the best combination of longevity, quality, comfort, and price. They aren’t the cheapest option, but they’re also not as costly as bamboo or linen.

Cotton sheets can be composted, unlike anything made with polyester, preventing them from going to landfills. Cotton sheets don’t pill like polycotton sheets either.

In cotton sheets, it can be difficult to tell quality sheets from poorer quality ones. Thread count, cotton type, and weave all contribute to the quality of sheets.
