What does thread count mean?
The thread count of your bed linen is simply the number of vertical and horizontal threads per square inch. Essentially, it measures how tightly woven a piece of fabric is. Generally, the higher the thread count, the more threads within the fabric.
The number of lengthwise (warp) and widthwise (weft) threads within a certain area are added up. For example, a cotton sheet with 100 warp threads and 100 weft threads would have a thread count of 200.
The thread count can be used as a rough indicator of the softness and feel of a fabric. A specific product is also used heavily in marketing to imply higher quality than competing sheets. You can make your bed sheets last longer by buying the best quality you can afford, washing them gently, taking precautions to prevent excessive wear, and mending where you can.
